What is Xarelto?
Xarelto (generic name Rivaroxaban) is a blood thinner. It is used to treat and prevent blood clots. It slows down the way red blood cells clump together to form clots.
Blood clots can cause serious heart problems, heart attacks, and strokes. Xarelto is used to save lives by preventing complications from blood clots.
What is Xarelto used for?
Xarelto is used to treat and prevent blood clots. It can melt blood clots in the lungs (pulmonary embolism or PE) or legs (deep vein thrombosis or DVT). It can also reduce the risk of a blood clot (PE or DVT) from reoccurring in people at high risk for blood clots. It can prevent blood clots in the legs and lungs for certain people who are hospitalized (including those who had surgery for a hip or knee replacement).
Xarelto can also reduce the chance of having a stroke in people with an irregular heartbeat, known as "atrial fibrillation". During atrial fibrillation, your heart beats too fast and cannot pump blood out of the heart. This causes blood to pool in your heart which then leads to blood clots forming in the heart. These blood clots may travel to the brain, causing a stroke, or they can go to other parts of your body.
Xarelto may be used with "baby aspirin" or low-dose aspirin to decrease chances of heart attack, stroke, and severe heart problems in people with heart disease (coronary artery disease, a condition where the arteries bringing blood to the heart are narrowed or blocked) or peripheral artery disease (a condition where there is decreased blood flow to the legs).
What are possible Xarelto side effects?
Bleeding is the most common side effect of Xarelto. Since Xarelto is a blood thinner, it slows down how quickly blood clots. It's possible to bruise more easily while using Xarelto. It will also take longer for any bleeding to fully stop while using Xarelto.
Unusually serious bleeding resulting from Xarelto may lead to death. Tell your doctor if you experience any of the following signs of bleeding:
Using Xarelto with other medications can increase your risk of bleeding. Prevent Xarelto side effects by telling your doctor if you use any of the following medications:
Aspirin, or other aspirin-containing products
NSAIDS such as ibuprofen (Motrin/Advil) and naproxen (Aleve) among others
Warfarin (Coumadin or Jantoven)
Heparin
Clopidogrel (Plavix)
SSRIs such as fluoxetine (Prozac) and paroxetine (Paxil) among others
SNRIs such as venlafaxine (Effexor) and duloxetine (Cymbalta) among others
Ketoconazole
Erythromycin
Phenytoin
Ritonavir
Rifampin
St. John's Wort
Carbamazepine
If you have an irregular heartbeat and are using Xarelto to prevent blood clots from forming in your heart, then stopping Xarelto can result in new blood clots forming. These blood clots may travel to your brain and cause a stroke, so it's important to continue taking Xarelto regularly unless otherwise directed by your doctor. Prevent Xarelto side effects by using the medication exactly as directed.
Blood clots may form in your spine if you have a spinal injection (epidural) while using Xarelto. This Xarelto side effect is more likely to happen if you have a history of spinal surgery, or repeated spinal injections in the past, or if you take other blood thinners along with Xarelto. A blood clot that forms in your spine may cause you to lose the ability to move (paralysis). If you have a spinal procedure while on Xarelto, and you feel any new numbness or tingling, muscle weakness, or trouble controlling your urine or stool, tell your doctor immediately.
A Xarelto lawsuit was settled in March 2019 due to alleged Xarelto side effects, such as serious bleeding which may cause death.
What should you know before taking Xarelto?
Do not take Xarelto if you're experiencing any unusual bleeding, or if you're allergic to any of the ingredients in Xarelto. People with artificial heart valves, or people with antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) should not use Xarelto.
Xarelto has not been tested for safety in children. Tell your doctor if you have kidney or liver problems before taking Xarelto. Do not use Xarelto if you're pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or are breastfeeding or planning to breastfeed. Do not take Xarelto if you cannot swallow tablets whole.
