Cabergoline is a dopaminergic derivative of ergoline with a strong and prolonged activity of decreasing prolactin level. It has a very precise action, having high affinity for D2 dopamine receptors, and low affinity for D1, A1-andrenergic, A2-andrenergic, 5-HT1-serotonin, 5-HT2-serotonin receptors. Clinically it is used to treat hyperprolactinemia. It is also used to keep Parkinson's disease under control.
Cabergoline acts by mimicking the effect of dopamine on D2 receptors. Thus it does not affect other pituitary hormones such as growth hormone, luteinizing hormone or TSH.
Prolactin is a somatotropic hormone, in the same family as growth hormone. Structurally it is similar to growth hormone, but the similarities stop only at the structure. Prolactin is not an anabolic hormone (not for skeletal muscle tissue), but it is a lactation hormone. Its physiological value is manifested especially in women, during pregnancy. In men it has no therapeutic value, but only side effects such as impotence, infertility, lack of libido and sometimes gynecomastia.
Although not associated with men, increased levels of prolactin have been reported among steroid users, resulting in a breast gynecomastia. This condition is manifested by a fluid that flows when pressed on the nipple affected by gynecomastia. Although the situation may worsen, usually the first signs frighten the affected person and thus interrupt steroid treatment. Gynecomastia is not associated with lactation, so this phenomenon is rare. It may be caused by hormonal instability associated with the sensitivity of the steroid user. But if it happens, cabergoline is regarded as the savior of the situation.
Although it is very rare for someone who uses anabolic steroids to develop breast gynecomastia, these situations exist, and the exact cause is unknown. Studies in this regard are few and inconclusive. Studies have been conducted on athletes using testosterone enanthate, propionate and nandrolone. Although prolactin levels increase, it does not affect the user, so most likely only the most sensitive are affected.
Dostinex is of interest to athletes and people who use 19-cloud steroids (trenbolone, Deca-durabolin). They reduce the activity of the thyroid gland (hypothyroidism), which leads to a massive release of prolactin in the blood (and hyperthyroidism - high secretion of thyroid hormones - has the same effect). Prolactin, in large quantities, has the effect of lowering libido and erectile dysfunction. Dostinex, reducing the amount of prolactin, also prevents these unwanted side effects.
The administration is done in the case of athletes with high levels of prolactin: it starts from 250 mcg twice a week, for 4 weeks, for a total of 500 mcg / week. After these four weeks the dose can be increased to 1 mg / week if needed. Usually the cure lasts 6-7 weeks, associated with the elimination of the steroid that caused the disease. With a half-life of 63 - 69 hours, it is recommended to administer once every 3 days.
The most common side effects are: headache, nausea, and very rarely vomiting. Other potential side effects are: constipation, dry mouth, abdominal pain, diarrhea, anxiety, insomnia, etc. But nausea and headaches are the most common. It may also intensify the effects of medicines to treat depression. Administration of cabergoline before bedtime reduces the experience of these side effects.
Other effects that appear, I would not call them even negative, are: increased sexual desire, stronger erections, more intense orgasms. It is not recommended to use cabergoline just to achieve these effects!
